Wind Power Then and Now

Wind power has been a source of energy from as far back as the 1st century AD. In the early centuries when the first set of windmills were built, the blades were made of a wooden frame covered with cloth. Though these windmills were not like our turbines today in look. They were very effective in fulfilling the purposes for which they were made. They were mostly used for grinding corn and to draw up water. Windmills were also used in the sugarcane industry to extract the cane juice for processing.

The windmill as it was known back then was also good in providing a means of pumping water. This made the lives of many farmers so much easier as they could get more water into their fields. It also helped the rail industry by allowing them to send water to wells which were more accessible to steam engines.

However things began to change in the 1980’s. We found out a way in which we could generate electricity by simply using the wind to power electricity producing turbines. This was the beginning of a new era. The design was modified to improve efficiency. Some countries now get up to 19% of their electricity from the wind. The numbers continue to grow as more and more countries realize the importance of using renewable energy such as wind power.

Foot for gas

Many people are parking their cars and turning to the pedals of bicycles and other such machines for traveling. It was about time I would say. There is no exercise in driving to work, standing up in an elevator or sitting down at a desk all day. Have a little fun and ride a bike.

Riding a bicycle to work is nothing strange or odd. Bicycles are one of the main means of transport in Japan and China. Conditions are not much different in the western world. They are also a popular occurrence in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Besides being fun bicycles are a great way for exercise and are good for running short errands. Due to the cost of gas, many liberties that people used to have are being taken away. They have to survive and they are adapting. If you do not know how to ride a bicycle. Here is a little advice before you bruise a knee or elbow. High gas prices good or bad?

I wonder. Is the wave of high gas prices good or bad? Many people have been complaining so much about it. It is really digging into there savings and causing havoc with even food supply. I have seen where people are getting frustrated some are calling on the government and other relevant authorities for help.

There has been an increase in the number of searches on the internet and other sources for the best ways to conserve energy while not taking too much from personal comfort. Activities like carpooling, taking the public transit, you name it, have become popular for all trying to stretch their dollar as much as possible. It seems the general population has come to accept that they are having a problem and something must be done. In short people are really frustrated.

However in the world of science people are celebrating. Why? Humans like to be under pressure. Some feel they work better under these conditions. For them this could never be a more opportune time. Scientists and other creative individuals all around the world are beginning to push their genius over the edge. Everywhere money is being pumped into research, everyone trying to find the next profitable source of fuel. After all it is better to be late than never.

Some methods might seem absurd like using animal manure, rocks and even algae, all to produce renewable fuel. ugh!. There are the other processes of using ethanol made from corn, sunflower, sugarcane, marijuana and the list goes on. I might have to get into the lab pretty soon too. It is very good to see the creative people who have helped to mold this God given earth with there talents and creativity putting on their gear and answering their true calling. Hopefully leading us out of our peril. Prayers can never be too much.

To lighten this up a bit further take a look at this video I saw on You Tube from the profile of VizSource. I will leave the comments to you.

10 General Energy Conservation Tips For The Home

Here are some general tips to conserve energy and keep cool at home:

1. Try to ensure that your freezer and refrigerator are as full as possible. If necessary place bottles of water in the extra spaces. When the freezer is full it will take much longer to heat up especially when opened therefore keeping the motor off for longer and effectively saving energy.

2. Replace old refrigerators and other appliances with new EnergyStar approved ones.

3. Vegetation is one of the best sources of shading given to man. Plant trees on the west and south side of your building to reduce the amount of heat it absorbs.

4. To reduce some of the work done by your air conditioner ensure that barbequing is done on the outside where possible.

5. Install low flow shower heads and fix pipes and faucets that are leaking, this saves water and conserves energy which is used to pump water.

6. Laundry can be done efficiently, use either hot or cold water for washing but be sure to rinse with cold water.

7. Drying clothes on the line outside can save more than using a dryer. Use a line when possible.

8. Unplug appliances when not in use. Most appliances tend to consume energy even when they are turned off.

9. Unplug chargers when your phone or whatever other batteries you are charging is finished. Over charging reduces battery life and the connected charger will drain electricity.

10. Turn off lights when they are not being used especially those with multiple switches.

The sour seeds they sow

I have always observed the way people seem to never get better from some sicknesses. They tend to visit the doctor and the pharmacy ever so often to pick up additional medication because of side effects caused by some other prescription. Many people end up with so many negative body reactions to these medicines that after a while they just pass away.

I do not know if there is a similarity but it was brought to my attention that there is a practice of selling a certain type of seeds to farmers. These seeds produce crops which do not reproduce seeds for the planting of the following crop. This would then cause the farmers to have to buy seeds each time they want to plant.

Based on my understanding these seeds do not guarantee a productive crop because they are also affected by the conditions for which they should be resistant to. These conditions include pest and disease resistance. I could understand why these farmers were upset, they even went on to call the seeds “terminator seeds” or “suicide seeds”. Reports have also suggested that these genetically modified seeds were sold after the authorities were possibly bribed in some instances.

Science is there to improve not to destroy. I just want to make an appeal. Most of these farmers are poor and are desperately trying to make a difference. Buying expensive seeds which are mostly non functional or just partly functional is something they cannot afford, and besides that it undermines their intelligence. If food is the staff of life and agriculture is the means for producing food. I do not understand why someone or some group would do such a thing. It really puzzles me.

Nurturing The Green Gardens That Feed Us

From the beginning of creation as far back as we read, in history books such as the bible. Farming has always been one of the main sources of getting the foods we want to eat. Surely plants grow wildly but if life must be sustained in an enjoyable manner it is always better if the foods of choice are cultivated.

Farming over the centuries have been done on different scales. This means different farms cater for different groups of consumers, it was also done based on the availability of land. On the one hand large scale farms grow crops like rice, corn, wheat and other essential staples. While on smaller farms and backyard farms you found that people tend to plant more vegetables which are relatively easy to grow. Some of this produce is sold at the market and some used for at home purposes.

Farming is a great way to build family unity in that every one has a chance to get involved. This is so especially on the more traditional farms which involved the rearing of livestock such as chicken, goats and cows. However even with small home gardens the whole family can get involved, even the little children. Besides a little dirt on the palms everyone should be able to have fun. The earth is beautiful we eat from it so it really would not hurt to help to nurture it.

Global warming and food shortages have prompted the appeal for more people to get involved in farming. Farmers and farming though are often times looked down on and I find that to be very startling. Without them there would be no human life because they provide the raw materials for our bodies to produce energy and function effectively.

Be a saviour in your own right, go out and get some seeds. Help save our environment. Plants effectively increase our oxygen supply and not to mention the amount you save by not having to go to the shop to pick up your greens. Your car would be lighter on those weekend grocery trips, effectively saving gas (another environment protection point scored). Besides it will be fun, do not leave out the little ones give them a chance to explore. Don’t forget to share your produce with a neighbour or a friend. Tell about your new garden and show them how to get involved.
